PROGRAM OF STUDY
Our curriculum is designed to offer an excellent didactic and clinical education with integrative focus. The didactic part of the MSAOM program is offered in two language tracks: English and Mandarin Chinese. Clinical training is taught in English only.
Our curriculum is designed to offer an excellent didactic and clinical education with integrative focus. The didactic part of the MSAOM program is offered in two language tracks: English and Mandarin Chinese. Clinical training is taught in English only.
Students initially learn the foundations of Oriental medicine theory in the first year of the program while at the same time, students learn all the acupuncture points and meridians and their functions and indications, students also learn the Chinese herbs with their properties, functions and indications. In the first year, students also learn the history and philosophy of Oriental medicine, introduction to Tai Ji, Qi Gong, and basic science classes such as anatomy and physiology, biology, chemistry, biochemistry, physics, psychology as well as microbiology and immunology.
In the second year, students learn in depth how to collect information, complete a patient intake, and organize the information into effective diagnosis and treatment strategies. They also learn the disease patterns of medical conditions according to TCM theory and they spend the year learning treatment techniques through clinical skills courses. Student in the second year also learn the Chinese herbal formulas as one part of the treatment techniques. They continue their biomedicine course work in pathology, Western clinical medicine, pharmacology, and medical research concepts.
In the third year of the curriculum, the focus is on clinical practice, case study, practice management, ethics, and professional issues. Students also learn about diet and nutrition from both Western and oriental perspectives. Students also focus on the various specialties on clinic practice such as TCM gynecology, dermatology, orthopedics as well as integration of Eastern/Western medicine. They further study Chinese medical classics with more clinical patterns and practical
